How does Snowflake intelligence Work?
Snowflake Intelligence is powered by the Cortex Agent API, which turns natural language into governed actions and answers.
Here’s what happens when someone asks a question
1. A user types a question
It starts with plain language in the chat interface.
For example: What affected the margin in the Nordics last quarter?
2. A Cortex Agent picks it up
The question is routed to a Cortex Agent – an AI model connected to your semantic views, search services and custom tools.
3. The orchestrator plans the approach
An LLM-powered orchestrator interprets intent and selects the right tools. Depending on complexity it may use one tool, chain several together or decide that the question is out of scope.
4. The tools get to work
- Cortex Analyst – generates SQL from natural language and runs queries against your semantic views
- Cortex Search – searches through your unstructured data, such as contracts, policies and reports to return relevant document text.
- Custom Tools – execute user-defined functions, extending the agents capabilities to your specific workflows.
5. The agent reviews, refines and responds
Before delivering the final answer the orchestrator checks and refines the results. The response appears as a summary, table or chart, with full traceability to source data and queries.
